Two Brits claimed the honours in the 2017 SBI World Superboat Unlimited class in the US. Ace throttleman Steve Curtis, who has a shedfull of world titles collected over two decades, was accompanied by James Shepherd, who drove Halcyon Collect to victory in this year’s Cowes-Torquay-Cowes race.
Although social media was flooded with pictures and videos of the crash between CMS 3 and No.18 CT Marine, it was Curtis and Shepherd who excelled around the tiny Key West circuit (a similar distance to an OCR course). In race one they made a wrong prop choice and had to settle for 5th place, but in heats 2 and 3 they took the lead and never relinquished it aboard the bright yellow cat Miss Geico, a Victory built product that had raced previously in Qatar colours.
Curtis, who is now based in the USA, had chartered the winning boat to the Geico organisation after the previous cat was severely damaged in the crash earlier this year.
