Following on from the success of OCRDA’s debut season when up to thirty teams took part, 2018 looks like it could be even busier. A Zapcat championship is being added to the OCRDA programme and there could be as many as fifteen of these lightweight inflatables taking part a new UK championship series.
In terms of size, Zapcats are almost identical to Thundercats which are currently still affiliated to the RYA whereas Zapcats are not. When you probe the rules of these two inflatable catamaran classes there are very few differences between the two, the major one being that the outboard on a Zapcat sports a prop guard. In 2014 Zapcats and Thundercats raced against each other in a 54 NM race between Lymington and Sandown IOW and back. Zapcats did not make it on the podium and one theory for this was that the prop guards do slow them down.
